Middle Park Maddness and Final Series Results
Monday November 23, 2009 8:00PM
Thank you so much to everyone who made The Double I Cyclocross Experiment a success again.
The last race of the series couldn't have had better weather and really, we lucked out all season long with mother nature. Add a little Grub provided by the good Dr. Giudici, and we had a fine day at races. The racing was fast as usual and there were some really tight battles across the categories. The Men's and Women's Open were the tightest battles for 1st and 2nd that we've ever had and I'm sure were fun to watch.
This year had the best turnout in terms of numbers of riders that we've ever had, averaging around 70 riders per event. We also had the largest turnout of Women's and Beginner racers in the history of any series that I've been a part of. The word about cross is spreading and it's all of you that talk it up that are building the sport in Iowa. Now we just need to get more Juniors involved.
Next season will see a larger series, nearly doubling the amount of races. Should be a hoot.
Thanks again for helping us all grow the Sport.

Thank you to everyone who came to Bettendorf to race on Sunday. The weather was great, the course was fun and the competition was seriously intense. We had the largest Women's fields we've ever had. There should be some no holds barred racing at Middle Park for Series Podium spots, as some of the Categories are really tight.
See you Sunday at Middle Park

Thanks to all who ventured to Bettendorf on Sunday for the races. The turnout was great and the racing was fast, though a little slower than normal due to the wettest conditions we've ever had.
There are going to be some battles for series placing. Hope to see everyone at the next 2 races, The Devils Cross on the 15th and the Series Finale, Middle Park Madness on the 22nd. There will be food and refreshments at Middle Park.
See you there

This was race number 1, of the 4 race Double "I" CycloCross Experiment Series. The weekend started with us putting the course together under the first snowflakes of the 2009 season. The temperatures dipped to a low of 29 and 27 degrees Saturday and Sunday and the high reached 42 and 43 degrees respectively. The wind on Sunday was relatively calm gusting up to a whopping 6mph. We had one lost on the day and are looking for the found part, a Gary Fisher bicycle bag full of clothes and gear is missing. If anyone knows the whereabouts to this bag, please contact me at 309-737-8270 or bcycleracr@mchsi.com.
We had a great crew again helping with the details of putting on a CycloCross race, which is much more involved than putting on the same level road race, criterium or time trial, so the volunteers are that much more important. So THANK YOU to all of my volunteers! You'll see some familiar names as some of these people help at everyone of my events, so a special thanks to you for always being there, and they are Lisa Wessling and Terry Burke with registration, AWESOME JOB you two!
Course set-up; mapping out the course, putting down all of the posts, and various landscaping tasks on Saturday were Jeff Abel, Phil Curran, Matt Klemish, Josie Miller, Scott Swanson, and Gerry Voelliger, with moral support from Mike Giudici, Pat Hanrahan, John Harrington, and Dave Thompson who rode over to see how things were going. Our course testers were Jeff Bradley and Deb Wood, along with Jeff Abel, Matt Klemish, and Josie Miller all getting a good edge for the slugfest on Sunday.
Course set-up on Sunday morning before the race was Jeff Abel, Phil Curran, Matt Klemish, and Gerry Voelliger. We strung 11 rolls of 1000 feet each, of caution tape all over Stephen's Park on probably over 600 posts on 19 acres. In addition, we set all the signs, tents, start/finish area, and registration in time for everyone to get about an hour of warm-ups on the course.
Our Official for the day was none other than Scott Swanson, who did an awesome job keeping track of the day! Teardown thanks goes to everyone who showed up, literally! There were people from every team that just started helping pull everything apart so we could all go have a much-needed beer! I think the course was all tore down and put on the trailer in about an hour, absolutely incredible! Thanks again everyone for all of that help!!
Other thanks that need mentioned go to Rodd Schick, Parks Maintenance Director for the City of Moline, and Julie from Crown Trophy, Bettendorf, IA for the medals, and Deb from The Outhouse for you guessed it, the very welcome Port-a-Potty, since the key didn't work for the park bathrooms.
I also want to thank the racers who came from everywhere to provide for some thrilling race spectating. With CycloCross being the most spectator friendly of all of the outdoor cycling disciplines, this course was great for viewing the race from every angle. I even took some pictures from some great spots that you can find on my web site at www.DiceTraining.com.
The first race was the Juniors and Men's and Women's Beginner Cat 4's with 17 participants in the race, and 14 were by one-day license holders, with a few of them participating for the very first time. I hope that you all had fun and will challenge yourselves for the overall series win!
The winner of the first race was Thomas Behne from Iowa City, IA, and the Women's winner was Wanda Berg from Iowa City, IA. Our only Junior was 12 year old Salem Snoop, whose done every version of this race along with his little brother, 9 year old Kaden Snoop, who both cruised in for the win! Way to go guys! Mom (who raced in a veil and nice top) and Dad (who raced in a tuxedo shirt and I think a bow tie) both raced during the day as it was an anniversary for them, as they made it a family event that all participated in. Great job and Happy Anniversary!
The second race of the day was the Men's Cat 3, 4's and the Women's Open. For the Women's race, Kim Eppen from Iowa City and the Iowa City Cycling Club, IA battled for a while with teammate Robin Williams also of Iowa City, IA but proved too strong and came in for a solo victory. Brittany McConnell, another teammate raced very well and for the sweep, and claimed the last of the cash for third place, and a 1, 2, 3 podium for the Iowa City Cycling Club Women.
In the Men's 3, 4's race, and the biggest field of the day at 17 racers, it was a battle between Kevin McConnell of Iowa City, IA and the Iowa City Cycling Club and Jeff Bradley from the Quad Cities Bicycle Club for second place. Meanwhile, Quincy, IL's Ron Bridal from the Bloomington Cycle Racing Team jumped out to 15-second lead right at the start that he never gave up. Each lap Ron just kept getting more and more time. That is how the podium stacked up at the end, Ron, Kevin and then Jeff for third. Also, as a side note, Kim Eppen finished fifth overall in the race, and she even started 1 minute behind the Cat 3, 4's. She had a killer ride, great race Kim!
In the last race of the day, none other than Brian Eppen from Iowa City, IA and the Iowa City Cycling Club put on a clinic for everyone's enjoyment. Brian jumped out to a commanding lead and then he just started picking off each rider in an attempt to lap the whole field, ala something Jason McCartney would do. Out of 12 laps on the roughly 1.2 mile course, only Nathan Kullbom from the Atlas Team and Iowa City, IA, was able to hold off Brian from making it a clean sweep. By the way Brian was riding, he would have only needed another lap or two and he would have caught Nathan. Carl Buchanan, from Waterloo, IA and Rasmussen Death Squad came in third and claimed the last of the cash.
In the Master's races we saw all ages filled but John Adamson, winner of the 60+ race and from Cedar Falls and Bike Tech, he had to beat up on the 50+ guys because nobody else showed up. His teammate Landon Beachy, from Kolona, IA was the only one to stay in front of John on his cruise to the 50+ win. Phil Curran, Davenport, IA and the DICE Team took second in the 50+ after doing the Cat 3, 4's race earlier in the day.
The 40+ winner, Bruce Grell, Davenport, IA and the DICE Team, had a great battle going with Steve Bullerman of Waterloo, IA and Bike Tech, who ended up winning the 30+ but got beat by Bruce on the last lap, for the third place podium spot for the overall in the last race. Colm Flannery of Chillicothe, IL and Proctor Cycling took second in the 40+ category just nipping Greg Aronson, second place 30+, Bettendorf, IA and the DICE Team, for the eight spot overall on the last race of the day.
Looks like both Kim and Brian liked the course by the way they rode. Lookout Jingle Cross, the Eppen's are on top form! It also looks like they are the couple to beat for the top honors for the DICE Cross Series Open categories. Iowa City and their Cycling Club produced the majority of the winner's today too, nice job!
Thanks again everyone for making this a must do race! See ya in two weeks, Sunday October 25 for race number 2 of the Double "I" CycloCross Experiment Series at Crow Creek Park, Bettendorf, IA for Psyclofest 2K9. Then on Nov 15, we have Devil's Cross at Devil's Glen Park, the other side of Bettendorf, and on Nov 22, we have the series finale and awards for Middle Park Madness, at Middle Park, Bettendorf. Day two of a great weekend of racing went like this.cool and fast for some record breaking times for both Men and Women!! The weather was just a little bit warmer than Saturday, with the low being 63 and the high reaching 70 degrees. The average wind speed was 7.5 mph and gusts of up to 22 mph out of the W/NW, which on the Cordova course; you got to feel the wind in every direction! But otherwise, it was a beautiful, mostly sunny day!! We had a lot of racers do both days, and we thank you a bunch!! We also had a few more tours of the QC's do to the I-80 Bridge.see yesterdays report!
Most of you may have noticed a name change to a very established race. This race used to be called the QCBC/DICE 40K TT Championships. Unfortunately, a few weeks after the race last year, we saw tragedy as one of our cycling brothers had his life rudely taken by a motorist, not paying attention to the task at hand, which was paying attention to the road while he drove his pick-up truck. Traveling at a high rate of speed, this person, on a clear and sunny Thursday morning, drove over my friend Dr Craig Schultz. Craig was preparing for the Iowa State Time Trail Championships in Nichols, IA that coming weekend. The Cordova course was a similar, flat, out and back course like the one Craig was going to race on a couple of days later. Unfortunately, Craig never made it, as he was left to die on the side of the road when the motorist decided to not stick around after he drove over Craig while on his bicycle. Dr Schultz had seen many cases like this, as he was an emergency room doctor, helping to save victims just as he was that very day. If you know me very well.and many of you do, this is one of the reasons I quit the corporate world, to help spread the message that we cyclists are people too, and have a legal right to the roads, as a "SLOWER MOVING, ROAD USER." Please help spread the word; talk to your elected officials and friends/family/neighbors, and become a "Change Agent" to help educate about bicycle safety, so nobody else has to go through what Craig and his family has had too. So from now on, we will Memorialize Craig with this race!
As usual, we have some great volunteers that help us put on great events. Starting with registration, I could not get most of this done without my better half Lisa Wessling, who puts up with my frantic behavior every race weekend! Therefore, THANK YOU for the awesome job you always do and being the best registrar around next to Rick Paulos.who has about 30 years experience on ya! Also helping with registration was Kathy "Kat" Weeks, who this year took on registration for TOMRV, the QCBC's biggest event every year, and a special, heartfelt thanks to Rhea Schultz, Dr Craig Shultz's sister, who came down from Wisconsin to see what this bike racing thing is all about. We truly miss Craig, and I hope what you saw was a testament to that! Thanks for being there with us in memory of Craig. Course set-up/teardown was Walt Dethlefs and Dean Mayne along with my Lab Luke, helping me get everything done. Course marshals were Walt Dethlefs at the TT turnaround and Officer Todd Allen of the Cordova Police Department for our left turn. Thanks Chief Whalen, for helping with this event like always!! We could not safely do this race without the help from you and your staff!! Our starter, the best starter in the business was Mike Desch and our wrangler was Dean Mayne. In addition, last but not least, Bob Lundberg from ABR was our official. Thank you all so much for a job well done!! I would also like to thank Deb Brunner from the Cordova Township Civic Center/Curator of the cemetery where we start the riders from, Deb from the Outhouse for the extra Port-a Potties, Julie from Crown Trophy for the trophies, MATTS for the medals, Profile for the Aero Bars for the raffle, and Park Tools for the loaner tools for each event! Thanks a bunch!! One other group I would like to thank would be all of the people who put all of this info in the papers and newsletters and on the web sites. Mike Moritz is the man that runs my web site and more, thanks to you for an awesome job, Cy Galley who does a fantastic job for the QCBC's web site, Jackie Chesser who does the QCBC newsletter "Pedalwheeling" each month, and Steve Tappa And Laurel Darren from the Dispatch who always have nice things to say about me and my events! All of you guys ROCK!!
Now on to the results! First, the raffle winner for the Profile Aero Bars was David Reed! You can get those from Bob Lundberg, from ABR. As I said earlier, we had some course records.actually, we had 5! The previous best was set by Paul Deninger, of Iowa City, IA in 2006 with a 54:20. This year we had four times underneath that mark with the fastest going to Jeff Otto from Madison, WI, riding unattached, with a blistering time of 53:05.24 and a speed of 28.09 mph, just nudging Paul Deninger, racing for Zoom Performance, out of Iowa City, IA with a time of 53:07.99. Awesome times guys! The Women's time, previously set by Tara Sheetz with a 1:00:04.46, in 2007, was broken by Julie Foertsch from Cedar Rapids, IA, racing for Planet Bike, with a 59:07.66, and a speed of 25.22 mph.incredible ride! We ended up having RAGBRAI conflict with this weekend, so many of the QCBC members were there instead of here, so we ended up with no QCBC Women and only five Men for the QCBC Championships. The winner for the day was Kevin Dodson from Rock Island, IL with a winning time of 1:05:04.56 and a speed of 22.92 mph, great job Kevin!!
Thanks again everyone for your support for these events and bicycling in general! And thanks for reading this race recap.we will see you next year on July 18, 2010, same time, same place!!

The day started cool and stayed cool for some perfect riding conditions.temp wise, which we saw a low of 56 and a high of 69 for the day. The wind on the other hand was more than we like for racing! The daily average was 12.6 mph and we saw gusts up to 32 mph out of the NW, which gave everyone a head wind on the home stretch, all in all a perfect day for racing! I would like to thank everyone for making this a great race! With many choices of things to do on the day, we had some great racers and volunteers! The volunteers were Lisa Wessling and Terry Burke at registration.who ALWAYS do a great job! Racecourse set-up/teardown was Walt Dethlefs and Terry Burke, corner marshals were Mr. and Mrs. Lockhart, Terry Burke and LT. Bill Kauzlarich from the Rock Island County Sheriffs Department for the one left hand turn, and our official was Bob Lundberg from ABR, who did an awesome job picking everyone out in the field sprints! Thanks to all of you for your help! I would also like to thank Dale Morris from Adventure Quest for the venue, Julie at Crown Trophy for the medals and Deb at The Outhouse for the port-a-potties!
We did have a couple of bad spots on the day, which should not be a problem next year. The I-80 Bridge.uhg!! Since it was down to one lane only, going westbound into Iowa, some people east of the QC's ended up taking the Quad City Iowa/Illinois Tour. Since they could not get off at Route 84 and ended up in Iowa, they had to take a 35-mile detour to get back to the exit off I-88 and I-80 to get to the race venue. We had it on the web site but a few missed it.sorry! We also had a couple of wrecks and flats and we hope everyone is doing OK!
Now before we get to the results, we have some clarifying to do.which might upset a few people, which is out of my control! Since this was the ABR (American Bicycle Racing) Sate Road Race Championships, to qualify for a state jersey there has to be a couple things in place. First, you MUST be a resident of Illinois to be in the running for the jersey. Second, and probably more important, you MUST be an annual license holder, one-day license holders do not qualify.sorry! I know a couple of people who were fitted for a jersey that will not be getting one do to these circumstances. All complaints MUST go to ABR, as they are the ones who make the rules. Again, sorry if anyone was mislead that they thought they were getting a jersey. Most of us have been racing a long time and these rules are the same for USAC as well as ABR, so this should not be new to anyone.
Now on to the results! We had some very strong fields with the biggest fields being the Men's Master's with the groups being 9, 21 and 8 respectively for 40+, 50+ and 60+, for a total of 70 racers. There were even some 70+ racers.you guys give us all inspiration, keep up the great work!! The Men's Open race saw a runaway Iowa field take the top three spots, with nobody even close to them. The Women's fields were small, so it is our hope to try to get more women into the sport for the future. This is a great course for beginners, so tell everyone for next year! Speaking of Beginner's, we had some strong Juniors, Beginner's and new Master's that tried this race! Hope to see you all next year! Thanks for reading and we will see everyone on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Adventure Quest.

I would like to start by saying.what an incredible day we had weather wise! The morning started cool, the low was 37 degrees, and at the race start, it was around 50 degrees with very low winds around 4mph, then the high got up to around 65 degrees for the day. I would also like to thank my faithful crew of volunteers, which without them, well, you know. Lisa Wessling and Jennifer Ainsworth mastered the registration duties, Terry Burke helped with course marking, Dave Van Hook helped me with set-up/tear down and was the turn around corner marshal, the best start timer around Mike Desch, Frank Martin was the wrangler, and William Huntsberger was our holder, and a big thanks to Bob Lundberg, our official. Thanks again everyone! In addition, I cannot go on without thanking the racers who drove a fair distance to race our course. Without you and your continued support, it makes it tough to put on events like this. So thank you for always showing up at this race! Last, but not least, I would like to thank the Barstow Fire Department, for the venue and the great food you grilled for us, the Quad Cities Bicycle Club, the DICE Cycling Team, the Rock Island County Sheriffs Department, and a few kind individuals for your generous donations to ensure a profitable event along with your continued support for grassroots bicycle racing here in the Midwest. A huge THANK YOU to ALL of YOU!!
The conditions were perfect Sunday for a potential course record. And we got one!! With a time of 29:21.84 and a speed of 25.39 mph, Debbie Dust, of the PACT/Dish Network team, from Chicago, blistered Diane Roanhaus', of Rock Valley Oil, from Franklin, WI, previous best time from 2007 by 1 minute and 8.06 seconds. Very nice ride Debbie! The men's winner for the '09 edition of the 20K, a new force in time trials from Muscatine, IA and the Harper's/Melon City team was Chad Bishop with our second time under 26 minutes. His time of 25:55.53 and a speed of 28.76 mph is second over all to Bryce Mead, of Jelly Belly, and Sterling, IL, in 2008 to a time of 25:18.42 and a speed of 29.47 mph. Our women's QCBC winner was Laurel Darren, Moline, IL for her first ever bicycle time trial with a winning time of 36:59.08 and a speed of 20.16 mph. Awesome job from one of the QC area's premier female marathon and ultra distance runners, who by the way is training for her first ever-full Ironman later this summer, Good Luck Laurel! The men's winner, the current Quad Cities Bicycle Club President, John Harrington won with a winning time of 30:32.19 and a speed of 24.14 mph, who rode a great ride, and then decided to take advantage of the great weather and some company from the DICE Team, and rode home to Bettendorf, IA from the Barstow course. With the results below, we try to do the best we can but sometimes there are mistakes, and if there are any, I apologize. If one was made with your results, please e-mail me offline and let me know what needs to be changed and I will make the changes. Also, if you should have received a medal, or received the wrong one, please let me know and I will get you a new plate if you have a medal or a new medal and plate if you didn't receive one.
